Even without discriminatory laws, that doesn't mean there is no discrimination in society. While I agree that her situation doesn't sound as bad as what happened in Indonesia, still clearly she also suffered some discrimination, and her coping mechanism while may sound wrong, is her way to cope. She is a victim, and she made her choice, and she has to live with the consequences, just like us. Even in Indonesia today, where many discriminatory laws were repealed after the fall of suharto, there are Indonesian Chinese, who mostly live in Java, and who mostly speak no Chinese or any Chinese dialect at all even at home, though they are still worshipping their ancestors, unless they also converted into Christianity or Islam.
