Don't assume the electorate has any common sense. These days both the public and the politicians are driven by the need to oppose the other side more than any ideas of the common good. What's going to happen when future Republicans try to get a Democratic candidate thrown off the ballot because they say a protest that candidate supported was an "insurrection"? This sort of thing can cut both ways, given how ill-defined the term "insurrection" is in the 14th amendment (again it was enacted right after the civil war to keep ex-Confederates out of power, so presumably it mean large-scale highly-organised rebellions such as the Confederacy). The vindictive nature of current US politics guarantees that the aftermath of this court decision will push the country farther down a slippery slope. Plus, Trump thrives on the perception that he's being persecuted by the political establishment, and his supporters wouldn't care whether that perception was justified or not, so it would only increase his support.
