succeeding the 054A. Probably more focus on ASW, quieter, with upgraded bow and towed sonar, torpedo, Z-20. Air defence wise it has 24 cell HQ-10 for short range coverage, its AEW radar allow it to detect, track and attack target at long range making effective use of HQ-16F up to 160 km. YJ-12A allow it to attack surface target up to 500 km range. Comparable ship using single sided AEW such as Aquitaine also only has 4 x 8 cell VLS, while larger destroyer such as Type 45 and Horizon which use similar two sided AEW only have 6 x 8 VLS. Its low cost will enable PLAN to build comparable number of ships to 054A, which stand at 50 ships in PLAN service, unlike the European ships built only in single digit number.
