My impression is that high level diplomatic negotiations like this, none of the details are ever leaked to the press. Usually they just have a read out at the end of the meeting. The only people who leak stuff on a regular basis are the Americans, and they were not a participant to this meeting.
In light of what was the result of this BRICS summit, an outcome no one anticipated with the addition of several new members, whose geographic location all along tradition naval choke points, those last minute demands seem to be all fake. Just someone planting fake news, for whatever purpose.
Whatever the reasons were for those alleged demands, and the outcome, they were at polar opposites. Who reported that news of last minute demands, had no idea what was going on.
It probably was all disinformation. Regardless, does not matter now, BRICS is happy with expansion, and this new organization on the world stage has momentum and potential to benefit their members. Hence why there is a lot of interest in Global South countries to join.
It just seems something important happened here at this meeting, and those demands were some attempt to derail it. Did Modi change his mind in two hours? Unlikely. Heh. Kind of funny.
That was my impression of the timing of the news. First these last minute demands were leaked. Then a couple of hours later, they announce the new members.
If this news was planted, someone was trying to embarrass Modi.
