Currently the best GPU or Graphics Processing Unit uses a 7nm chip.

They put a few of them, these chips on to this graphic card, which is a circuit board. Then they shove this circuit board into the computer.

That is the GPU.

But wait, the computer has a CPU, the Central Processing Unit.

Why is there a CPU and a GPU?

This started in the old days. Everyone wanted to play games. But the graphics to the games, made the CPU slow down. So they invented a new way of doing it, put in another chip to handle the graphics so the game plays better, hence if you want to play games, you need a GPU (aka, a graphics card) in your computer.

As time moved on, people noticed that this graphics card, or GPU, was really good at crunching data, hence why your game is awesome. So they started using these graphic cards, for AI calculations.

So today, the best graphic cards, uses 7nm chips. These cards are used in computer systems devoted to AI research. Besides playing games.

According to this video from January this year, both the A100 graphics card and the Biren graphics card uses a 7nm, but the Chinese one is faster, due its design.

The Americans have sanctioned SMIC, but SMIC, as from that Huawei article, is able to fab 7nm chips.

That is where we are in this tech war.
